Meet Rocket: Needham’s Beloved Community Resource Dog

By Kate Shamon Rushford May 2, 2025

Rocket isn’t your average pup—he’s a four-legged hometown hero bringing comfort, connection, and a whole lot of tail wags to Needham residents of all ages. We caught up with Rocket (with help from his handler, School Resource Officer Joe Brienze) to learn more about his daily routine, favorite snacks, and what it means to serve his community.

What does a typical day look like for you, Rocket?
My job is great! I usually start the day at Needham High School in the grade-level office, where I greet students coming in and out all morning. Then, Officer Brienze picks me up and we head out to visit people around town. We stop by elementary school classrooms, the Center at the Heights, and even the hospital to spend time with patients and staff. We average about 300 visits a year—so yes, we stay very busy!

Do you enjoy riding in the police cruiser?
Absolutely—especially now that we have a “new” cruiser with my name on the side! It’s fun when people recognize us driving around town. I often take that time to nap in the backseat.

What’s your favorite treat?
I’m a big fan of peanut butter pretzels and turkey slices. But let’s be honest—I rarely say no to any treat!

What’s the most meaningful part of your job? Some days, Officer Brienze and I show up during someone’s worst moments. If I can spend just five minutes with them—help them smile or forget their pain, even briefly—then I’ve done my job. Sometimes, simply being present makes all the difference.

What do you like to do when you're off duty?
Relax! When I have my vest on, I know I’m working—it takes a lot of focus to stay well-behaved. After work, I love to unwind by tearing apart toys to find the squeaker inside. It’s my version of stress relief!

Do you have any advice for the community?
Be kind. We know there are many kids and families in Needham who are struggling—even if they don’t show it. Sometimes all it takes is sitting with someone and listening for five minutes. That kind of kindness can change everything.

Quick Favorites with Rocket:

  • Treats: Peanut butter and cheese
  • Weather: Snow days, paws down
  • Hobby: Chasing birds (aka FOE—Feathered Objects of Escape… one day I’ll catch one!)

Rocket and Officer Brienze remind us all that compassion, presence, and a wagging tail can go a long way. Thank you both for all you do to make Needham a stronger, more caring community!
