How to Spend a Day in Brookline with the Family

By Kate Rushford January 14, 2026

Brookline is one of Greater Boston’s most welcoming family destinations — a mix of leafy parks, cozy shops, history, culture, and sweet treats that make for an easy, smile-filled day with little ones (and big ones too!). Whether you’re a local family looking for new weekend plans or visiting from nearby towns, here’s how to make the most of a fun day in Brookline with kids.

🌳 Morning Outdoors: Parks & Playgrounds

Start your day with some fresh air and open space at one of Brookline’s many parks:

  • Larz Anderson Park – A timeless favorite, this park’s open fields, picnic areas, and pond are perfect for kicking off a relaxed morning. Bring a frisbee or ball and let the kids burn off energy before lunch.
  • Griggs Park – A local go-to with a playground and nice walking routes.
  • Brookline Reservoir Park – Great for more outdoor play or a quick nature walk near town centers.

These green spaces are stroller-friendly and great for picnics or games before exploring the rest of Brookline.

📖 Storytime & Learning at the Library

If your kids love books and interactive play, swing by the Brookline Public Library Kids’ Department for storytimes, sing-along sessions, and creative play opportunities. Their schedule includes family storytimes and themed activities suitable for toddlers through elementary ages — perfect for a cozy transition from outdoor fun.

🎬 Shows

Every family’s tastes are a little different, and Brookline has something for everyone:

  • Catch a Movie or Kids’ Show: The iconic Coolidge Corner Theatreoften features family-friendly movies and special kids’ shows throughout the year — from animated favorites to live music and magic performances.
  • Magical Puppets at Puppet Showplace Theater. This intimate theater offers shows nearly every weekend of the year — from whimsical marionette and hand-puppet stories to imaginative performances created by local and touring puppeteers.

🍽️ Lunch & Sweet Treats

After all that play, Brookline’s restaurants and cafés offer plenty of family-friendly options. Wander down Beacon or Harvard Street for casual eats:

  • Grab sandwiches, soups, or kid favorites at Rifrullo or Cutty's.
  • Treat everyone to cupcakes from Party Favors
  • There’s something for every pizza eater in the family, including vegetarian options at Stoked
